Roy Eric Carroll was born in Belfast in September
1977.
His footballing career started when he signed
with Hull City as a youth trainee in the September of 1995. After
making 50 appearances for Hull, he joined Wigan Athletic for a
record fee of £350,000, in April 1997. He soon established
himself as first choice at Wigan, making 170 appearances for the
Club.
In season 1999/2000 Roy played a major part in
Wigan's run of 26 league games without defeat at the start of
the campaign. For such stunning displays Carroll was recognised
by his fellow professionals with a selection to the PFA award
winning Division Two side. The end of that season saw Roy miss
several games, including the play-off defeat by Reading, due to
an appendix operation.
In July 2001, Roy Carroll completed a dream move
to Old Trafford after a move to Leicester City fell through. Sir
Alex Ferguson snapped up the young keeper to strengthen his senior
goalkeeping department, believing him to be one of the most promising
keepers in Britain.
A full international, Roy Carroll won his first
cap for Northern Ireland on 21 May 1997 against Thailand.
